The Electric Scooter Safety Checklist

If you’re riding an electric scooter for the first time, you’re likely going to have an accident in your first 10 rides.  Experienced riders can still have accidents when they let their guard down. Electric scooters are like any other transportation vehicle, you wouldn’t ride a bike on the road without a helmet. We’ve compiled all the practical safety tips in this article to make sure that you stay safe, whether you’re using a Mearth electric scooter or not.

Must-Have Electric Scooter Accessories:

Your electric scooter safety gear will depend on weather conditions and speed. Commuting in the city will limit you to 25 km/h, so you’ll only need light gear.

  • Full face mountain biking helmet
  • Motorcycle gloves
  • Safety vest or other high-visibility gear: LED backpack with turn signals, reflective tape on helmet/clothing
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Backpack or scooter bag for foldable multi-tool set, wallet, phone, keys
  • Optional: motorcycle safety gear (if you’re going at 40 km/h and above – elbow/knee pads, motorcycle jacket/pants/boots), glasses, rearview mirror, additional front light, clip-on light on helmet/bag/clothing, U-lock, phone mount, alarm, and maintenance tools (air pump, tyre gauge, tyre sealant, valve extender).

    The Electric Scooter Pre-Ride Checklist:

  • Check stem and folding mechanism. Is it wobbly? Is it locked on? Is the needed safety pin in place?
  • Check deck. Are the screws on the deck loose?
  • Check tyres. Is there enough tyre pressure? Are the threads worn out? Do the wheels spin without making any unnecessary noise?
  • Check brakes. Is your disc/drum/regenerative brake responding to the thumb or handbrake? Are all your brakes working?
  • Check suspension. Are the screws on the swing arm loose?
  • Check electronics. Are the display and lights functioning properly?
  • Check the battery. Is your battery fully charged (do not wait for your battery to be fully drained before charging)? Is the charging port properly closed?
  • Check weather conditions. Is it windy? Is it dark? Is it raining? Is it cold/wet?
  • Check route/terrain. Is it high/low traffic? Do you still remember all the turns in your route?
  • Check your gear. Does your helmet fit? Are all the accessories you’re going to bring in good condition?
  • Check overall condition. Are there any disconnected or loose wires? Does the rear mudguard rattle when you move the scooter?  Are there any nuts/bolts/screws that are loose?
  • Check your mental state. Are you fit to ride? Are you tired or stressed?
  •

You can use the pre-ride checklist to inspect your electric scooter after every journey. Even expensive electric scooters eventually get beaten up when used regularly. By following this checklist, you’ll be prepared before every ride and spot problems early on.
